Kiribati once sat across the International Date Line, which meant different parts of the country could be on different calendar dates. In 1995, Kiribati realigned the date used by its eastern islands so the country could share the same working week.
The International Date Line is not a perfectly straight border fixed by one world authority. It bends around countries and territories because governments choose the civil time used within their jurisdiction. Kiribati's change created the familiar eastward bulge that places the Line Islands fourteen hours ahead of UTC.

If several households are involved, a shared UTC time can prevent ambiguity, but translate it back into local times in the message. "15:00 UTC: 3pm London, 10am New York" is clearer than asking everyone to do the conversion. Also check whether the intended date is Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Boxing Day for each participant.
UTC is a reference, not the celebration
UTC is useful because it gives everyone a shared reference point, but it is not how most people experience the holiday. How a misprinted advert became NORAD Tracks Santa

In 1955, a department-store advert printed a telephone number for children to call Santa, but the number led to the Continental Air Defense Command. Colonel Harry Shoup and the staff answered the calls and began giving children updates.
NORAD inherited the tradition after it was formed in 1958. The modern tracker follows Santa around the globe, turning the time-zone sequence into a story children can watch.
